when sitting in my driveway with a hose hooked up to it i noticed a lot of water coming out where the shift cable is connected on the back of the lower unit. is that ok or is a gasket leaking?

No, water should not be coming out from there. Sounds like the rubber “o” ring did not seat correctly when installing the unit. There was just a posting on a similar problem, check it out. http://www.sterndrive.cc/vbforum/showthread.php?t=574

The 90Wt will work but the question is how did you fill the drive.
hopefully from the bottom untill it came out the top.
