I need to replace my Mercrusier outdrive. what is the difference between the old style and new. I have a 1971 120hp. i think it has the short input shaft, but i dont know how to measure it. does the distance start from the yoke or center of the u-joint

Your unit should have the old style short shaft. You can go to "Technical" towards the top of this page under the Sterndrive logo. Click on "Technical guides" in the drop down menu and then click on "Inline Engine Short Yoke Installation" and it will show you how to measure. You measure from the end of the shaft to the start of the yoke.
