"O" ring on verticle shaft

I recently installed a SE 106, on the old unit there was an "O" ring groove on the verticle shaft below the splines, the new unit did not have this "O" ring groove so therefore I did not install a new "O" ring. Do the new units not require this "O" ring?

That is correct, new units do not require the o-ring. It was redesigned many years ago.
