shifting problem

hi i just got my boat in the water and i have a problem if i start the engine and i shift in ff the boat will go nice and slow .if from ff i try to shift in neutral the engine stops .if i do the same thing in rew the shifting goes normal..so mi problem is from shifting from ff in neutral..i have an merrc 5.7.and se outdrive.the shifting cable is new.

I would check to see if the shift cable was damaged during installation. It sounds like it still has a tight spot. Check the shifting with the boat out of the water. If you still have the same problem then it is the shift cable.
