I am getting ready to purchase an se106. I have an 86/87 four winns with a 4 cyl. mercruiser. I believe it's either a 170 or 185 not positive. any idea which gear ratio I would need to be looking at?

You would need our 1.81 to 1 ratio drive. You can check your old upper to be sure. The old unit should have 17 and 19 tooth gears.

what is the difference between the 1.81 and the 1.81 old style?

The old style refers to the input shaft on the upper unit. Up to around 1983/1984 the input shaft was 8 1/8" long on 4 cyl and inline 6 motors. All units after that are 9 9/16" long. The measurement is from the end of the shaft to the shoulder behind where the gimbal bearing rides.
