Outdrives

Sterndrive Engineering (SEI) has engineered a replacement outdrive. The Alpha One® and Gen II, which are tradenames of MerCruiser®, have a dominant position in the marketplace. The outdrives offered by SEI are fully compatible and interchangeable with MerCruiser® outdrives.

The MerCruiser® outdrive is very common in 17 to 25 ft runabout boats. In fact, MerCruiser's® market share through most of the '70s, '80s, and '90s was estimated by experts to be over 80 percent. The SEI outdrive is designed as an economical replacement for MerCruiser's® Alpha One® and Gen II outdrives. In our opinion, it makes no sense for the owner of an older boat worth only several thousand dollars to spend top dollar for a new MerCruiser® outdrive. Many of SEI's customers are actively seeking economical solutions for older boats.

Often SEI is asked about the quality of our outdrives and how the company is able to offer such a product at a fraction of the MerCruiser® price. SEI's outdrives are assembled at our factory in Clearwater, Florida. The parts come directly from suppliers around the world made to SEI's exact and precise specifications. Eliminating the middleman reduces SEI's costs and these savings are passed on to the customer. SEI also avoids using distributors thus reduces the company's costs at getting the product into the hands of the boat owner. As for quality, SEI's outdrives are thoroughly tested for both performance and endurance. SEI operates one of the world's only research lakes dedicated to the testing of marine propulsion systems.

SEI's outdrives come with a three-year, fault-free warranty which means that the outdrive will be covered for any failure that requires the outdrive to be replaced or repaired. This is truly a remarkable warranty. Hit a rock, suck up some fishing line, drag the outdrive up the boat launch by mistake, it does not matter, the outdrive will be covered by SEI's fault-free warranty.

SEI has been in the stern drive business since 2003. The company was founded by Greg Pickren. Mr. Pickren also is the owner and founder of the company Short Block Technologies (SBT) which is the largest supplier of Personal Water Craft engines in the world. Justin Webb is the General Manager of SEI and was previously employed by Konrad Marine and GLM.

SEI also offers hydraulic parts that are compatible with MerCruiser® outdrives including the Alpha One® and Gen II. Hydraulic parts for the outdrives include trim pumps, cylinders, hoses, hardware, and other parts. The pricing on these parts is very economical as well.
